Pro-tip! Buy the superior digital copy at work, and then begin downloading it. By the time your day is over, the game will be all ready for you when you get home, ok?

Doesn't take long to install from disc also discs allow you to sell, trade, lend to people and save on download times.

Unfortunately, I think I only would have gotten the Amazon Prime promotional credit thing they're doing now instead of the discount if it was the physical disc. But yeah this is terrible, I probably won't do this again.

So is this supposed push for digital merely because people are too stupid to use or understand a disc? That would explain a LOT about Steam though.

As I recall, you would still need the disc to be inserted into the console to play. The installing should basically make it take less time to load. I think that's how it is, from what I can remember...

Pretty much. Funny. I preordered Fallout 4 for PC, because at the time, my internet speed was shit. Load it up and nope, basically just a shell for Steam. Took me four days to download the game. Took launch week off on vacation to play the game. Spent majority of it just waiting to download.

I'm blaming Steam because when broadband was new here it took me like 6 hours to DL HL2 and its horrible payload. I also bought the physical version.

Funny that the shitty software is a big reason why I've stuck with discs.

Seems a bit of a dumb thing to say being as consoles have HDD now so taking up space doesn't really matter.

Switch is the worst, publishers can't be bothered to put the full game on the cart because it would cost 20 cents more so your forced to download the game piecemeal

This is only partially true. Sure, games install so things can be processed faster. The reason they don't take up space is because you can uninstall but still have that copy stored externally. Keep the saves and all. The idea is to avoid hours of DL'ing or missing servers. Given the choice I'd rather look at colorful box art than a bunch of wires and external HDD's.

In other words with physical discs the console HDD is more temporary workspace than actual long term storage.

Physical copies allow you to share your games as well, and play on different playstations etc without having to log in to an account as well. You can sell physical copies to others etc.

For instance you can buy a physical copy of a game with a gamers club thing from bestbuy for 20% off, play it for a few weeks then sell it to someone for the price you bought it (not for much longer but still).

Same is true for a bit more of a loss without that though. A digital copy can not be sold to others if you buy it for $60....your out $60 even if you only play it over a week and then never want to play it again.

But a new game and finish it in a week and there is no replay value for you? Sell it and end up spending maybe $10 total (woulda costed that much to rent it).

That is the main advantage of physical copies.

Imo the best part of physical copies is legacy. Let's assume you want to play that game again 15 years from now, and the game was never remastered. All servers for download are down. And you don't have it installed on your system anymore for whatever reason (freeing space, it broke down, etc). You'll only be able to do that with the disc in hands.

This applies to self-contained games (i.e. Nintendo cartridges) but does it varies among some PS4 and XBox games?

You can still play it just fine. You have the disk so why would you need the PSN?
