I have an xbone and I recently bought a physical copy, but it says I have to install a 60.56gb(!) update.

What use is a physical copy at this point? Might as well just make it a digital only release and save production costs.

Because people would complain that they don't have a physical copy, despite not being able to use it any more than a digital one with all the DRM.

Also, it took my crappy internet nearly an hour to get to 30%.

It says it's "ready to start" but I know it's all LIES.

It's ready to start, like with Battlefield 1 being ready to play the story when it knows damn well you want the online.

Well, I'm not really interested in the online for this one, but I am worried that I might get randomly cut off during a big story mission, and I'll have to wait another hour before I get to jump back in.

Does that happen? This is the first time I've encountered something like this.

You should look it up, helps pass the time.

A lot of games now have a feature where a partial install will allow you to start playing, though depending on the game, this may not be much content. Mortal Kombat X for example had nothing but the menu work until it finished everything.

I've been re-installing Master Chief Collection the last few days and I'm still not finished.
The update it needs to download is over 70GB.
When at about 60% I tried to boot up the game and there I could customize the installations so I only install certain parts like the campaigns.
I just wish I started the game sooner, because if I did then the installation would probably have been finished at this point.

More games should have customizable installs IMO.

If the box doesn't say it requires a download to play it, you could take it back and try to get a refund.

I looked some things up and apparently, it wasn't this bad at launch.

Since then, they've apparently reworked some things and added a few updates, plus they threw in all the DLCs for free, so things got a bit bloated at the end.

True enough.

I've tried playing it when it was at 50% but I got this strange no texture/shadowy version. It's pretty spooky and strangely even more fittingly atmospheric. Another person got this exact same issue and played through the game like that and managed to record it.

So I guess this happens when you play it before it completely installs. It's pretty interesting how much it changes things.

Bethesda only published the game, id Software did all the development. And to answer TC's question, it's 60 GB because of the textures that they used. Most games just have small repeating swathes of textures for the ground, walls, etc; DOOM doesn't do that and goes for the "megatexture" route with the majority of the game, resulting in massive 18k x 6k blocks of textures being displayed.

Punishment for buying the XB version.

No, seriously you got the whole SP game on the disc. The DL is pretty much the entire MP mode including the arcade. All this came after launch and was eventually offered for free. Why it makes you DL everything even if you have no interest in the MP, dunno. Surely there are a few patches included. The MP is great though.

Not a bad idea necessarily, but you know what would be even better? If games didn't require installation in the first place...
