I like reading short books with my 7th graders in Advisory (we read The Little Prince lol) and I asked them and they all speak Spanish so I'm thinking of choosing a book in Spanish this time. Would prefer one that is originally in Spanish rather than a translation

Huh, I've always heard of this book but never read it. I'll look into it. Might be too long but we'll see.

For some reason I just thought of The House on Mango Street. I recently reread it and loved it, even though I hated when I read it in middle school because our teacher made us write a full-page of cornell notes for every chapter (some chapters are shorter than 2 pages...)
Thought it was originally in Spanish but it isn't, but might still be good for a read

Don't read Don Quixote. It's pretty much unreadable at that age for native speakers.

If you're interested, I can ask a Spanish lit major friend of mine for recomendations.

Yes lol that's why I didn't respond to that suggestion
I don't even think I could understand most of it in English if I were trying to read it casually in the middle of the day

Never rebellious, and definitely not among the elite.

In fact, screw what I said earlier. I doubt I could read the original version without a lot of footnotes lol.

The House of the Spirits

I loved that book but I read it in high school and thought it was appropriate only then

It'd help if the book weren't over 200 pages too >_>

Ah, true. I guess I did read it in the latter half of HS.

LWfC is not a middle school book at all.

I recommend Sin Noticias de Gurb. It's short, quirky and funny, and the prose is simple. May require a bit of knoledge of Spain culture though.

Los de Abajo? Actually might not be appropriate for middle school.
