The thing I don't understand about the suicide person is the people that try and commit suicide for some reason, they don't die, and then that's it. They stop trying. Why? Why don't they just keep trying? What has changed? Is their life better? No. In fact, it's worse, because now they've found out here's one more thing you stink at. That's why these people don't succeed at life to begin with. Because they give up too easy. I say pills don't work, try a rope. Car won't start in the garage? Get a tune-up. You know what I mean? There's nothing more rewarding than reaching a goal you've set for yourself.

But damn this is a darker joke than usual for Jerry.

It's not even very accurate about suicide attempts <_<

I will say this is the only joke I've seen in the first 3 seasons that has made me cringe so far though. Which is amazing for a show from close to three decades ago.

Yeah, it's almost like he's joking

Seinfeld's humor is generally based on regular observations.

People attempting suicide and then moving on isn't a regular observation. It's a pretty ignorant assumption.

Don't get me wrong. The primary reason this hasn't aged well because it's coming from Jerry. I think the routine is more because it's from a time where most people didn't really understand suicide and depression.

The routine seems more like it's coming from the perspective that the people who commit suicide are doing it for attention and don't mean it instead of a dark joke encouraging people to commit suicide.

This is Jerry's stand-up at the end of the show. You can tell the intent of that joke is different back then.

The episode is about a guy committing suicide and everything there holds up well.

The most hilarious part about this scene is that the children nowadays watching Seinfeld (and probably sit in the camp of "Seinfeld is not funny" due to not understanding it) wouldn't even understand it at all since they wouldn't know what the hell Cable even is, and that once upon a time Television was pretty much the greatest invention of the 20th century.

How quickly smartphones and internet pretty much killed television though...
