SA1 suffers from a ton of filler (boring hub world, boring treasure hunting, boring shooting and Amy's slow platforming levels) and terrible, gimmicky level design for most of the levels.

SA2 has even worse filler (the treasure hunting and shooting gameplay are designed even worse and the game forces you to play through them just to get to the funner speed levels) and arguably worse level design (endless corridors all over).

Chao Garden Adventure 1 and 2 were both great games that happened to have Sonic games built into them.

Sonic decided to try making Stand-alone Sonic games after that, and it really hasn't worked out since.

Eh, there's fun to be had from them but they're hardly must play classics for all gamers.

Both Sonic Adventure games are objectively terrible, albeit 2 less so. On top of that, they aren't even really Sonic games, Sonic Adventure 1 in particular; combined they are largely responsible for ruining the Sonic franchise because Sonic Adventure is Patient Zero of Shitty Sonic Design that re-imagined the series and later 3D games kept trying to emulate instead of making actual Sonic games.

If you changed the characters and names of Sonic-specific stuff like Chaos Emeralds to something new, no one would have said Sonic Adventure is "like Sonic" and at best they would have said "this is a shitty platformer that stole Sonic's ring mechanic"

They both aren't entirely bad, just certain mechanics, parts, etc. are and drag down the overall quality of the games TC. Which is the glaring things most people tend to notice.

The first one is borderline, even the good characters have glitches up the ass in their levels. 2 is still good though.

Loved them both when they came out and have some good memory of them.

However like a lot of games from that age they havent aged well (goldeneye / mario 64 / final fantasy 7). I played SA1 when it was on the 360 a little while back and had a few glitches in the first hour that forced me to restart the game. Would love it if they did a full remake or even just a remaster where they fix the glitches but sometimes nostalgia is best left to the last.

I still think they're both great. I played the first many years after the second and thought they were about equal. Sonic Adventure 2 will always be fondly remembered by me though.

I enjoyed playing Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 on GameCube. I just recently purchased them when they were on sale on Xbox One and boy they aged POORLY.

Sonic 1 - 3 & Knuckles, The Sonic Advanced games, and Mania are all solid titles.

I didn't like Sonic Rush or Sonic 4, the physics felt off.

I bought a Sega/Dreamcast humble bundle a couple of years back, had Sonic Adventure 2, Crazy Taxi, and Bass Fishing. I was excited to play SA2 because while I had a Dreamcast, I never owned the second one, just the first (I rented SA2 a few times and don't think I ever beat it).

I quit that stupid shit in 10 minutes and wondered why the 14 year old me ever thought that the first or second were any fuckin good.

And btw I think Sonic 2,3&K, CD, and Mania are some of the best games around.

It depends on your definition of bad. I remember it fondly, but it's definitely rough and janky. It's still playable, but it is not something that has aged well. I feel like if Sega could perfect a 3D Sonic, which has yet to happen, and remake them, they would be quite solid.

I just downloaded SA2 on my XB1 a few weeks ago and got to the Knuckles space level and then realized that the game is trash all around, despite what I used to think about the game as a kid. The Chao Garden stuff is still alright, but honestly the levels are too much of a chore for it to matter as I really don't want to play the story at all on account of how badly designed it really is.

With that sad, there are far, far worse 3D Sonic games.

Anyone who thinks SA2 is still good is not remembering the Knuckles/Rouge or Tails/Eggman levels, i.e. 2/3rds of the goddamn game. Even SA1's characters were better than that.

Only the Sonic levels were good. Everything else about them sucked. Who ever thought the knuckles, robot and big cat would be good needed to be fired.

the games just... don't feel good to play and have absolutely atrocious level design. at least, the ones I played. I played sonic 1 many years ago and didn't really like it that much. I recently decided maybe I'd been too harsh on it and gave sonic 3 a try. It was... a little better than I was expecting, tbh. Controls, especially the way momentum works into jumps, felt strange. Design was still a bit all over the place, and enemies a bit pointless, and the viewport still a bit small for what the game is going for, but it was ok.

Then I got to marble garden zone, which is probably the worst level I have ever seen in any 2D game, and I dropped it and vowed never to return. Not great to have something that awful right near the start before people are really invested in the game
