funny, when i was in school i never had to prepare for a murderer running in and shooting at my classmates...the fact that we have to now have a drill for this, seemingly normalizing the event is terrible.

Neither a tornado nor atom bomb ever tore up my school, but we practiced for such anyway.

i didn't know they sold tornadoes down at the local store.

They don't sell school shooters either

no, they just sell guns to them...

Actually, most school shooters steal the guns they use from their first victims.

Actually this is complete bullshit and most school shooters get the guns from their own homes or bought from gun stores

Active Shooter drills were not something done at my high school, but it was over 10 years ago that I graduated.

People say its over dramatic yet I remember in high school during 2005ish theyd do a drunk driving thing where theyd have a wrecked vehicle on campus with volunteers whod play dead and injured students with extreme gore makeup on laying around and in the car. A bit dramatic but I remember it having an effect. Its more engaging and impactful than some drill where just an alarm goes off and you walk around outside or having some talk in the auditorium.

Plus it lets students know roughly what a real gunshot would sound like.

You can kill someone with a blank cartridge

At point blank range or if a projectile is lodged in the barrel, otherwise if you have a brain they're pretty safe, what do you think the starting guns they use at the track events fire?

there's a difference there. they're trying to prevent drunk driving accidents by scaring the kids into not drinking. you cant prevent a gunman form coming into school and shooting up classrooms by scaring kids with drills.

My school will be doing this eventually this year.

Pretty sad where we are at, but I understand why it is happening

I'm 30 and we absolutely did lock-down drills.
How old are you guys?

Exactly. It's like they all forgot about Columbine.

Lockdown drills are different than firing blanks

This makes me worry about a school shooter taking advantage of this and doing it when they are firing blanks. It would be extremely confusing and many students would probably not even realize what's happening if an actual shooting took place in the drill and would likely lead to a higher loss off life

Trying to prepare for disasters, how terrible

^^

When i was in school, we also never had drills for gunman specifically, but we did have bomb drills and drills for if an unauthorized person(s) entered the premises

While i agree its awful we have to do this, itd be a disservice to not educate the students on what procedures they should follow should a mentally ill gunman make their way into the school

Unfortunately, this country closed all those mental health facilities so this is what we get and have to prepare for

Isn't it kind of counter productive to have shooter drills? It's usually a student and they're probably going to be familiar with how the school handles those situations if they're running drills all the time.

It's kind of like fire drills. The fire knows to engulf the exits in flames first because that's where people run to. No fire drills and all you're left with is a sad, slightly confused fire.
