I've always been a collector of watches and into horology. Unfortunately, because of this I've owned and still own some nice time pieces. Most recently I was wearing a royal oak and a coworker Googled the brand not the watch and mentioned the cost.

Anyway, I felt uncomfortable because of it since they kept mentioning it and haven't worn a watch in weeks. I felt naked. I decided to buy a nice cheaper model that isn't as flashy and on the more conservative side. That same co worker asked how much it was and I said $80.00 - that shut him up.

I just wanted to vent that I hate when people make you feel uncomfortable.

I would agree but because of him a few other co-workers made comments. It's really off putting.

Well when it's a 25k time piece and suddenly everyone comments it's odd. Even our fabrication guys were doing it which makes me feel off as they don't get paid well.

Why bother showing off your expensive watches if you don't want people to comment on them?

You misunderstood. I bought a cheaper daily wear watch which I told him cost $80.00 when asked. It's the Tudor black bay bronze that I linked. Its not my business what they can or can't afford.

Not much. Around $3,800.00 from an AD. Has a completely self made In house movement with cosc certificate for this model. I'm actually enjoying more than I thought. I have a Rolex 114060 as well as a few omegas but overall I'm digging the Tudor so far. What pieces do you own?

I'd say wear it if you want. The only concern I'd have is if someone's a potential thief and accidental scrapes. Reminds me of someone who had a 30-40 dollar watch and it was alright, but got really offended/mad at me when they walked past me too close and caught their watch face on the side of my pants causing them to freak out that I messed it up. I was literally just standing there focused elsewhere. Acted like I keyed their car or something.

I'd be pretty miffed if a pricey watch got trashed by something randomly small. Had a digital watch become unusable because some nitromethane splashed on the face of it, ate away the finish completely.

You could just not wear it every single day I guess, but downside there is they might start commenting/noticing when you do actually wear it. On the other hand if you're not wearing it or using it to tell time... what's the point of it. It's meant to be worn and tell time, not sit in a drawer to rot forever. If it was one of them fancy art watches I could justify stowing it away for safety, but based on a brief google search it doesn't seem to be one of those.

My concern in a situation like that is how it might reflect when it comes to salary raises and such.

Management: Should be give PIITB415 a raise?
Director: Wasn't he flashing around a $25k watch the other day? I don't think he needs it

Similarly, a friend of mine stopped driving his BMW to work because when his employees felt underpaid that was the first thing they pointed out.

I've seen worse things happen in a corporate environment.

Yeah corporate environments foster mediocrity that way. Youre supposed to be a good little slave and despise your own life but not too much.

If you stand out for having nice things or enjoying your vacations the corporate beehive will beat you down for that
