Apparently, if cigarettes were tax-free but still kept a normal (not overkill) profit margin for the makers and retailers, they'd cost around $2-$3 for a pack of 20. Keep in mind there's also packaging and transport costs involved.

Though at $10 a pack, you've got it good really. A pack of a cheap brand will set you back $25 (about US $16.50) here.

I can't imagine smoking, that looks like a shitload of money spent a day on it since I hear people smoke one or two packs a day (WTF?)

Unless they're filthy rich, most people who get to that level of heavy smoking will switch to roll-your-owns, which work out cheaper in most places. Even here, where they slapped an additional tax on RYOs to try and even things out, they're still cheaper in practice because you tend to have less tobacco in each cigarette.

(Of course, vaping is generally far cheaper than even rollies.)

I paid about $2.50 for marlboro 72s- South Carolina in 2008 while visiting Hilton Head

I don't smoke anymore but they run about $5-7 a pack where I'm at in Ohio.

Here's what you do. Buy a rolling machine (some are automatic).
Buy some tubes, pretty cheap.
Buy a big bag of PIPE CUT tobacco. The importance of pipe cut is that for some reason it isn't taxed like "normal" tobacco even though it's pretty much the same thing.

Nowadays you can make your own that look like real cigs complete with filters and all that.
