I picked up borderlands 2 on steam sale for like $8 or something the other day. Started playing it only to realise the reason I stopped playing this game in the first place was because I had already flogged it to death.

Nostalgia glasses.

I feel like I'd feel this way about a lot of games in between then and the 'classics'. I still love old Genesis/SNES/NES games and play them every few weeks, but the games of later periods seem so dated by comparison. Even good games like New Vegas or KOTOR feel so outdated nowadays.

Yeah. There's that period just after they started to roll out 3d and for the next 5-10 years where things just looked really terrible. 2d art always looked good.

Arc: Twilight of the Spirits. Had the demo as a kid, saw it in a games shop as a young adult and went home to play it. It wasn't bad, it just wasn't the most ideal gaming experience for me at the time and it didn't entirely hold up from my short experience years ago. Same story with Downhill Domination and MX Superfly.

Colin McRae Rally on PS1 though? I'm not good at it, but that shit still holds up.

Yes! I know exactly what you mean.

I also notice that when I go back, I often forget all the little annoying parts of games that we just accepted at the time, like shitty radar/HUD, oblique controls, missions/quests that just dragged on and forced you to grind, collectables tied to the main game, etc.

i know right. if a game doesnt auto play by itself in realistic VR, wtf is even the point of playing it.

I am still playing the first KotoR and it's fine, but I have a strong tolerance for older games because I play them a lot.

I bought Dragon Warrior 3 for a nostalgia blast. It was kinda boring but I was really enjoying it. Realized I never beat the last secret boss as a kid so I was grinding monster medals so I could go into the bonus dungeon.

About a third of the way through the grind, I turned on my game one night and found that all the save files had deleted themselves. The cartridge was scrubbed. There was no recovering it.

Killed my desire to ever even look at that game again tbh.
