1) donate to large well established charities doing many different things
2) donate to smaller charities doing more niche work

even if you don't donate money, if you did, how would you approach it?

probably niche

i would try to approach it by anonymously donating so i don't get pestered with loads of junk mail.

also reference charity navigator to find out if they're legit.

If I was wealthy I would do it kind of like stock diversifying, so donate like $100 to 20 of my favourite charities, hand-picked. If this is an awful way to do it I would be open to donating a larger amount to 5ish big charities.
