By the time you're three or four, you're old enough to understand that death is when people sleep for a really, really long time.

I know it's supposed to tug on the heartstrings, the innocent kid who doesn't understand that a parent is gone, but it's just silly. Kids know what it means when someone is dead unless you hide from them the fact that their parent is gone.

I didn't understand death til like maybe 7 or 8. Not sure exactly. Even then I had weird misconceptions. I thought blood always came out of your mouth no matter how you died

^ Now that one makes sense because it's an act of denial. He wants to believe that his father is simply hurt and can get back up.

The Land Before Time also does a good job with the issue because the mother's dialogue is ambiguous enough that a child might not get that she's dying.
