WHy what happened?

She received a warning for receiving coaching from the crowd (I dont think she deserved it, personally), she received a 2nd warning for slamming her racket to the ground, which resulted in a point penalty (this was deserved). She received a third warning for verbally harassing the official, which resulted in an entire game penalty (I dont know if the language she used necessarily warranted this, but she went on for a very long time).

The crowd was cheering for Serena, and Serena was the one prolonging the scene, so the crowd started booing heavily. Even during the start of the award ceremony. As I said, though, it wasnt directed at Osaka at all. She got loud ovations when she was presented the trophy, as well as during her outdoor interview with the ESPN crew.

Anyone who watches tennis knows that the umpire overstepped in a way that's rarely ever seen. Players complain, break their rackets, and insult the umpire often enough that a game penalty is outrageous given what Serena said.

At the very least, I dont think that the calls ultimately affected the outcome. Osaka was outplaying Serena pretty convincingly. It would have taken a major turnaround for Serena to stop Osaka and make the comeback (which, granted, isnt out of the realm of possibility, but unlikely).

I'm noticing that people are actually trying to blame Serena for how the crowd treated Naomi, lol. cut the shit. the US hates when ANYBODY beats America. that treatment was not Serena's doing. Serena has had many meltdowns and this one isn't special. she gave Naomi her props.

Lol she seemed like she deserved that game penalty. Tbh, a game penalty isn't exactly a huge deal as a whole. If you're better, a game penalty would be a minor setback towards an eventual win. Seems Osaka beat her fair and square and the crowd's being a clown. Pretty funny that uh.. tennis crowd of all things is actively interfering with a really important finals. I don't think we hear a whole lot of that in general

This has been mentioned a few times but people are still replying to the contrary: the crowd never once booed Osaka. All boos were directed at the umpire and officials.

It was a shitty situation for Osaka, especially as young and shy as she seems to be and given that Serena has been one of her idols, but the boos shifted to cheers whenever she was addressed.

There's nothing unusual here. Serena always has problems with the referees. One time she got disqualified mid tournament because the ref claimed she threatened to kill her.

Serena denied saying it, and we'll never know for sure but she got thrown out right there on the spot.
