I guess I didn't know what else to do. I have 400+ hours left on what is supposed to be my best work ever, and will be if I can see it through. I'm just having a serious case of the "why's?"

What if I work that hard and no one cares because I don't have any connections to the industry? And for the record, I know I'm not the best writer. I'm talking about my drawings.

Van Gogh was called a shitty artist by his contemporaries. Art is obviously subjective.

And I'm pretty damn good at drawing, no way around it. You don't have to like it or me, but denying it just makes you look salty.

If the latter, why do you think you'll never be able to top it?

To date, but most likely ever. And I say that because it's an 8' mural with an insane amount of detail. Like, without changing art styles (comic), it's about as big, bold and detailed as almost anyone would do. 3-400 individual drawings all combined to tell one story (the entirety of DB).

A similar concept done better is a Star Wars mural made by pro comic artist Jason Raiz that has episodes 1-7 on a slightly larger scale. I'd recommend looking at it, it's incredible.

A. Yes, it is. Comic art takes just as much skill.
B. 99% of artists in the industry make "fan art". Maybe 1% actually create their own original characters.

Absolutely. Ive had that same internal battle before too.

But the thing is, there will always be other people willing to do that, and if you want to become famous then youre competing against them.

Ill give you credit, some of those are really good and Im pretty picky when it comes to art. I think the cartoony/anime style ones needs some more work but the more realistic ones like that Star Wars one look great.

I noticed that not a lot of these are colored, I would say working on coloring and promoting your art on more platforms like Instagram/Twitter/Pixiv/Reddit/Tumblr would be a good next step. You might not be getting the recognition you want because of that or because since not a lot of them are colored they look more like sketches than finished work.

I dont know how much youre working on joining communities with artists or reaching out to people irl about art but that is also something very important. I play Smash Bros competitively and at pretty much any tournament there are people selling art so maybe you look into something like that.

Im a musician and I know that if you want to get know for any type of art you have to always be on the grind, how much are you committed to drawing? Are you constantly improving your craft? Every day? If you want to be recognized its possible to just be good enough if youre lucky, but the statistics arent kind to luck, you have to be more than good enough by a large margin if you want to stick out more than someone that is just drawing as a hobby.

Thanks. And I don't really do color because I'm a fan of black and white, but I do see people getting more recognition when their art is colored, so maybe I'll try it.

I draw about 5 or 6 hours every day, so I'm pretty dedicated, although I haven't really tried to reach out to different communities like you said. Promotion isn't my strong suit.

You should make accounts on those sites and post some stuff there. But on a place like Reddit there are a ton of subreddits so you could possibly post something in multiple subreddits, but dont blast them with a bunch of pictures because then people will stop caring. Only post your best ones every now and then and probably add a link to your main art page in the comments. As someone thats on a lot of art subreddits just posting pictures there and getting a lot of upvotes might not even translate to people coming to your other pages at first, I pretty rarely actually check out an artist even after liking one of their works unless I see something that floors me. So thats another example of how I said before how the quality of your work has to stand out so much more than he average or even above average artist and so its not just Oh thats cool and it can rather be Holy shit who drew this? I need to see more.

Something else you can do is find an online artist with a good fanbase. Find out where they post their art and maybe look back and see how their popularity rose over time (how long it took for them to get popular) and what made them start to gain popularity so you can set some sort of timeline. Theres nothing wrong with checking out someones hustle and trying to apply some of the things that they did to gain prominence.

And yeah its cool to like black and white, theres nothing wrong with that, but you probably should try to use color more and work on that and see if it gets your stuff some more recognition.

Its worth noting that you keep namedropping innovative artists whose art style was meant to reflect the changing world around them. Your art style is not comparable to theirs on that level, but you definitely have the technical skill needed to become that.

I guess Picasso was a product of his time, just like Warhol. I just can't help finding it a bit insulting to the artists that work more with realism and technical application but aren't nearly as well known. Something about it just irks me.
