it still boggles my mind that everyone knows how fucked up people are and yet we still create institutions which give a single individual an insane amount of power over the rest of us.

what the hell kind of short sighted thinking is going on...is it that they think the bad guys just won't get into power? or is it that their particular views are so righteous and so "correct" and moral that there's no way anyone would go against them so let the State have that much power.

Or is it that they think they'll be able to stop it after its too late...

We have the left to blame for this one. It is why big government became a thing. It is why the yearly amount of Medicare fraud is far greater in sum than the profit most large companies earn over decades. It is why the federal beast still draws in trillions per year and squanders hundreds of billions per year.

I don't think we can just throw out the creep towards authoritarianism from the right as well. While historically conservatives were able to put pressure on individuals through social order, those institutions are much weaker now. I don't know if we just have authoritarian tendencies in general (it seems we do), but there is a big difference between control through social order and control through state power, at least in my mind.

And I don't think conservatives are going to like the grave they dig themselves by making this switch

Central banks made it very cheap for governments to borrow money. This fuels the welfare/warfare state and it will continue until there is some sort of default, whether outright or through inflation.

Ending the warfare state shouldn't cause much social upheaval outside of DC. But one way or another the West is going to have to sacrifice the welfare state. It was a bad idea with good intentions, and it's never going to work long term.
