it's interesting to see how the world map differs from the 3DS version like this one it's a bunch of large areas connected by thin tunnel-like corridors while in the 3DS version it's all just one big area

the PS4 versions end up being larger overall not just because of that, but because your characters are to scale on the map while they're oversized on the 3DS map

I preordered it, started the download before I left for work, and put the PS4 on sleep mode. Instead of diving in head first, I'm wasting my time online. I dunno, priorities or something.

I got it. Super early but I'm liking the jump button and the moving around during battles.

First thing I did actually was turn off movement in battle since it doesn't actually do anything. Just line up and hit eachother that's all I need

You can have it like 99% filled out by level 99.(though unless you purposely grind to level 99 you won't get that far)

Skill points are really backloaded so that like for the first 20 levels you only get 2 or 3 but once you get past level 50 you start getting close to 10 per level up

You can respec at some point, but you can max it all out eventually with consumable items.

Seeing this level of production value in a super traditional JRPG in 2018 is really surreal, but even super early into the game I keep finding myself thinking how happy I am that this game exists. I have yet to spend a single gold other than the holy water you get tricked into buying. Guess that's a good thing since all this exploration yields enough items to justify it.

Played a few hours last night (though Im not very far since I make sure to talk to everyone in DQ games). Doubt it will dethrone DQ VII in my rankings since that game was like tailor made for me, but well see if it can knock V and VIII down a peg!

Played a little bit last night and this morning. Some thoughts:

Current: Level 7, outside the first city

- The control scheme on keyboard is a bit wonky. I switched around a bunch of key bindings and still have a bit of trickery, especially since it only shows controller buttons for things and the menu keys are a separate set from the movement controls.
- I'm not in love with the main character's purple/green color scheme. I hope there are possible costume variations with future equipment besides the pre-order DQVIII set.
- I really enjoyed seeing everything slowly switching from day to night, and the moonlit shine on the monsters in their encounter dances. Even with my graphics turned down to the lowest possible (and starting highest despite the lag was really cool to see everything... beautiful looking game!), it's still an eyeful.
- I feel like some minor pacing issues are going to frustrate me if they continue throughout the game: long-ass ladder climbs, long battle start-ups, and quick enemy pops in the area. I learned quickly not to try clearing things out, but I really really want to =P

Overall, a little over an hour in, I'm quite enjoying it despite my early complaints. I'm very interested in having the story pick up, but I'm also wary because Trails of Cold Steel (playing right now) has felt pretty slow and this is making that feel twice as fast.

- Also this. The music and enemies are still classic, but it's still very much classic. Nothing really feels new yet. Like, I haven't played much of Breath of the Wild yet, but it does so much to add to the classic and build off it whereas this is just all familiar and nostalgia which isn't bad, but a bit off-putting sometimes.

And after having just beaten Chrono Trigger... well, while I'm really interested in having some level of that kind of battle difficulty (which enemies heal off magic, what magic weakens them, what kind of counter-attacks should I avoid, who to prioritize)... I really, really, really wish I had an auto-attack option right now.

DQ is a very old school style JRPG series where the strategy to beating enemies was grinding levels. You probably wont find much if any real strategy in this game

I mean there are stat Buffs and debuffs but that's about it

Usually the character with the strength buff is the best character in the game

But doing low levell runs is also an option and usually pretty fun

They made a feature complete bug free game out of the gate on their first try

Specifically, I'm trying to jump from the roof of the item shop in Heliodor to the building to the east (both because the girl who wanted her cat rescued seemed to imply that jumping from that roof was possible and because there's no ground level entrance to that building), but I've failed like 15 times now and running back up to the roof is getting really annoying.
