Just marathoned the 3 movies (well, watching the 3rd one as we speak, it's taken one hell of a bizarre turn). Is there an anime series for this? If so, is it a prequel or a sequel?

Read the manga. It's wayyyy further than any of the movies.

yea, there's a series that started in 2016 that follows its events

there are about two seasons released so far, iirc, but the 2016 series isn't so well-regarded, largely for its animation

Yeah, 2016 used this really horrid looking CGI.

I've purchased the series on bluray and they added more hand drawn sections and fixed up a lot of the animation.

Also did yourself a disservice by not watching the original anime series before/ instead of the films.

Yeah they fixed the walking scene, though the animation in general is still pretty low budget and off-putting.

I only watched the series as it aired, and I missed the changes in animation

And be prepared to wait around a year for the next chapter once you catch up. There is a very real chance that the author will die of old age before it finishes.

Didn't even know there was one. What does the original anime cover?

^ the original anime covers the Golden Age Arc, but it's like 26 episodes

but yea, the manga is great.

Gungrave is also a good anime, where it has some Berserk-like similarities going on.

The original anime covers what you just watched but in a much less rushed and better fashion without distracting bad CG.

The movies were pretty decent but I did prefer the series.

the 1997 series covers the same content, but is much more fleshed out and gives a lot more detail that was not seen in the movies.

The '97 series also cuts some content, but that's because they were trying to make it a self-contained story, and not just the middle piece of a much larger story.

If you're looking for new content, your only real option is the manga. The 1997 anime just covers what you've already seen. There is another anime from 2016, but it's god awful.

Alright I'll give the manga a start tonight. I ended up stopping Shippuden completely once I started reading the manga so I'll give it a shot as well.

Are the chapters short like Naruto or longer like Attack on Titan? I've only ever read two manga before (the ones just mentioned) but gave up on AoT after like 30 chapters.

Yea it all caught me off guard. Went from being somewhat based in reality with some fantastical elements to being simply fucked up. Was definitely not expecting that. The whole rape scene was disturbing as fuck.

iirc, each chapter in the manga is 30 something pages, with some exceptions

and there are currently 357 chapters

edit: I think I'm wrong, and they're usually around 20 pages

the manga is really the only way to get everything. the 90's anime is more involved than the movies(and i strongly recommend it), but still leaves out a lot of stuff and only covers the manga up to a point. stay away from the new series.
