As far as military might is concerned, we could have won but the whole "don't want to attack another nation because the Vietcong retreated into neighboring countries at several points" thing prevented that victory, and having failed to decisively struck them down would qualify as a loss. As far as preventing communism, we withdrew so that's a loss. And as far as the cultural war in the US, it helped create a permanent schism of civilians not trusting the military or government, and towards the end of the East inconvenient we had there was unfavorable to the sweeping majority, so that's a loss.

Them turning to capitalism later could be seen as winning the long game though.

We lost, we could had won but the hippies started this movement about love an peace and everyone started smoking weed and we decided that sending in everyone and using the whole might of the USA armed forces would result in a negative net gain and that's why Vietnam is now the new USSR and are a nuclear threat to all it's neighbors, darn hippies.

Viet Cong > VC > Victor Charlie

Except then people realized that the "abbreviated" way of saying it was actually a syllable longer than the regular name, so they just shortened it to Charlie

Thanks.

Yeah, like how some people say "Double U double U two" instead of "World War II."

IIRC in the movie We Were Soldiers they are going up against the NVA and it shows like actual NVA officers planning shit out. So not just guerrilla VC but actual organized NVA units.

Premiere book on Vietnam-

The Perfect War: Technowar in Vietnam

We were defeated 100%. Our method of warfare was defeated. No doubt about it. The US also lost the morale battle, since it literally had to pull out due to the war's popularity getting low, which was the strategy of the Vietcong.

They 100% defeated the US Empire. They beat us skirmish wise, and beat us battle wise in the Tet offensive.

It sucks, it shatters your whole view of the war, cause I had professors teaching me BS about how we tied our hands behind out back during the war, and if we just had more time we would have won, well looking at the evidence that was 100% false interpretations. The truth hurts, but the Vietcong kicked our ass. We had bad leadership, an awful strategy, and of course the style of corporate welfare was bankrupt.

We loss.

I don't really know what you mean by this. The Tet Offensive was a military disaster for the NLF, and severely crimped their fighting capability. The value to the North was entirely in propaganda and the psychological impact the attacks had on the South and the U.S.

They forced the Americans to retreat into the cities. It was a pyhrric victory for the Americans, strategic victory for the Vietcong. Yes they were demolished so much that they couldnt fight the war anymore alone and had to use the NVA to help them from that point on, just because the Americans bombed the cities which they werent expecting. But since the countryside was now abandoned by the Americans. They recruited and got all the people forced to act like villages back into their army. Overall yet was a strategic success.

A lot of Vietnam movies came out in the 80s which makes sense since it's usually a 20 year cycle.

The US actually bombed the living shit out of Laos and Cambodia trying to stop the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Turns out that bombing massive tracts of jungle isn't exactly cost efficient or effective in general.
