You could have planned a day off, go out with the family, and enjoy some happy times between all the stress of the job.

Then you get the call that you're needed on a case and now your fun day has turned into:

1. Looking at a dead body that may have not met an elegant end

2. Combing over a crime scene looking for any little sign of what happened

3. Possibly having to meet with the victim's family to let them know that their loved one won't be coming home anymore

All that to replace what was supposed to be a good, casual day with the family.

Yikes...

are homicide detectives always on call? i assumed it would be next man up on shift or something.

I've assumed it's workload based.

In bigger cities I assume there is a measure of on-call, although anyone who called time off for that day is as low as possible on the queue, I'd expect.
