The former was a TV movie and the latter was a series that continued off of said movie.
It was always odd (and funny) to me that the main character's best friend and the love interest (best friend's sister) were Asian and the movie but turned Black in the series.

So jarring, that's how you know they gave no fucks working on that whole show. In hindsight, I should have probably watched more of it. It's probably ironically hilarious.
