No reason to need more than 8 gigs of ram unless you game (ewww) or if you use your pc for work.

why do you need a pc at all if its not for gaming or for work? just use a phone or something to check your emails...
chrome/firefox nowadays take up just about all those 8gb, 16gb should be standard.

Bit of an exaggeration no. I have a shitty PC at work with 4gb RAM and it just about manages chrome, slack and word at the same time, although it struggles sometimes.

i mean yeah, the computer will operate with 4gb of ram, but not well. i still cant recommend anyone buying less than 16gb of ram for a new system..

8GB is fine for most uses, including gaming. 16GB is better, though. Anything beyond that is overkill, except in specialized cases.

8gb is low end average these days, 16gb is "safe" for now since not everything utilizes that. RAM, as always, is something that doesn't help having more than needed but very noticeable if you're below sufficient. That's why rarely will someone advocate for 32gb, and why there is debate between 8 vs 16.
