My parents had chickens for a while. We had to start giving the eggs away to anybody that wanted them. There was one in particular that couldn't properly produce eggs. Apparently the shell is somehow optional? Like, this chicken would lay eggs without a shell. They were just gooey membranes full of egg innards. Eventually she started producing the shell, but it led to some funky shaped eggs, like one had a point on it instead of being rounded, where the shell didn't harden until it coming out. It was freaky, but funny too.

They don't tend to lay every day, but they do lay more days than not. Some breeds of ducks are not far from that, too.
