(at least amongst my peers anyway)

but yeah maybe it's just me but I think I'll always associate it with that late-school into university period of life, at one point it was a really vibrant way of people interacting and keeping in touch during those years. as weird as it sounds, it probably added to the generally carefree (bar exam time obvs) nature of university at the time, or at least how i idealise it looking back.

now nobody uses it actively at least, just lots of people silently browsing or maybe tagging people on occasion.

pour one out.

Before I deleted my account several months ago it was basically just a couple sites that I had subbed to (like The Onion) and a couple people who were mostly constantly just posting stuff from the news. Hell, I rarely ever posted anything personal on there, usually just memes or song videos or dumb videos in general.

I got so tired of how it tried to show me posts, too. I would scroll through the same three alternating Onion articles a dozen times to see a post from an actual person that was two days old but then when I went to their page they'd have like fifty new posts. Shit was so stupid.

most people I know have just migrated to other stuff like instagram, though.

i appreciate (and was going to acknowledge in the OP) the potential harmful effects on people but I don't think that's the reason for the massive drop in activity

I kinda get a justification for filtering certain content out so that you see more from people you interact with, but I find it really hard to believe that out of 100+ people on my friends list only three or four were actually posting anything.

Everyone on my list was pretty liberal. I do have a relatively conservative Trump supporter friend who I saw posts from, so idk if that was it.

Maybe not. People are addicted to that shit. I think it's irritating as fuck that I constantly have to bitch at people for being in their phones when having a conversation. Most people respect me enough to not use their phone when we chill cause I give them the same respect

Not gonna lie that also bugs the hell out of me.

I'm almost 30, I've been immersed in video games and the internet since I was like 4, so when I go outside I'm actually looking forward to human interaction and conversation. But everyone is just screwing around on their phones. People say hi and then look down and that's it. It's crazy.

The early days of Facebook were largely about communication, establishing new connections with classmates and meeting new friends.

Then it just became memes and big images of inspirational text and links to stuff that no one but the original poster cared about.

Then everyone's mom and grandmother and shitty cousin and sister-in-law's annoying husband had immediate contact with you.

And let's not forget about being watched by your employers and people losing their jobs over shit they posted.

Well said. Facebook peaked around 2008/2009 I'd say.

Yeah but those were the EARLY early days. I was on Facebook shortly after it launched in 2004, the days when it was only for college kids and you could enter your course numbers and actually meet the people you went to class with were great. We used it to invite people to parties at our apartment.

ugh, if I didn't use it to keep in touch with family I would have deleted it long ago gloom

Get your family on e-mails and phones dude.

I've actually been closer to my family since I got rid of it. My mom calls me and I decided to not ignore her phone calls like I ignore her messages on FB. And she sends me more e-mails. My brother even called me recently and I had been trying to send him messages on FB but we never had any full conversations there. We talked for two hours!

In stock price. But no one I know uses it as extensively as then did a decade ago. Most of the posts I see now actually seem to be crossposts from Instagram or articles on liberal issues.

I remember when people used to have an outing or go on a trip and post an album with 100 photos. Never see that anymore.

The weird thing imo is that it's not even *that* long since it was far more populated and active than it currently is. It just seems like people slowly stopped using it actively and it just became this weird wasteland of page and news posts.

Like a lot of 'challenges' were popular in like 2013/2014. That's not that long ago.

I still see people put up albums presumably either out of habit or for archiving purposes but engagement just isn't there anymore

now it's nothing but ppl sharing endless memes. Ppl rarely even post their own words or pics on their statuses

It fell off big time, it'll prolly fade out like myspace did in the next year, everyone seems to be transferring to instagram

I still use it everyday to post memes that the same six people always like. Mostly it's main function for me is the Hip pages so I can see what's going on in the community that day, especially things such as high profile crime near me

Yeah it's wild how it seemed too big to ever fail only a few years ago. I doubt it'll fade out completely but I foresee it becoming mainly older people arguing about politics or some shit.
