48 hours in 3 days when you aren't prepared for that is a lot.

Nah dog, only illegal if I don't get 8 hours between 16 hour shifts.

Also... I only worked those 3 days and have the rest of the week off. So it has perks.

Well it's a 4 and 2 schedule. But you can be forced to stay for 16 all 4 shifts. But you can take those extra 8 hours as PTO (12 hours of it). Basically if you work it right and put in the hours early you can take months off when you get seniority.

it depends what kind of work you're doing. I can program 16 hours a day if I have access to food/drink, comfortable bathroom, and know that I can sleep at any moment if I really needed to.

but if it's either a physical job, or a boring job, for that long... and if there's a commute... no thanks, I quit.

OT bites but makes a 40 hour week pretty nice. Then once you're used to the hours, the pay check is nice. As bonus, not having time to yourself helps you not spend money.
When does it start affecting taxes?

Is the overtime in any way related to the prison strikes I keep hearing about?

No, it's related to too many people abusing their sick time and a lot of people retiring and basically leaving literally not enough bodies to fill positions.
Luckily the laws got changed and they can't keep you for more than 16 hours at a time.

I'm already well over what I'm supposed to make yearly, with months left in the year.
