That sucks because I feel like they usually do it for selfish reasons. Like, they're currently going through a rough patch in life or their self-esteem has been a bit down so they need someone to pump their tires.

It's almost never because they care about/miss you and just wanted to reconnect (or even give the relationship another shot).

The guy is usually the loser in a breakup because it often times comes out of nowhere for him and he gets no real closure in the end and often still has feelings for the girl.

In the girl's mind they might have already been broken up for a long time, she is just going through the motions but she's over it and ready to move on. The decent thing for her to do is to just stay gone though, and let you get on with your life.
