The whole game is basically 3 different campains by 3 different people. You don't actually "beat the game" until you finish them all.

It's intentionally overrated a bit so newbies will actually push through part B. It's still good, but not that good.

It's one of very few games that actually left me feeling it was a true masterpiece and evidence for games as art. I play a lot of games, but rarely do they make me feel the way that game did.

I'm leaning toward a bit overrated when it comes to Nier Automata too, but while mostly better and liked more than the original Nier, it is not quite as overrated, well, when it comes to the fans anyway(The gameplay of the original Nier was pretty barebones, lackluster and one of it's biggest flaws.). Nier Automata is still a great game(8/10) though, and thankfully the gameplay is actually pretty good this time around.

I really wish Yoko Taro would either make a more traditional action JRPG with actual parties and a huge world to explore, or remake the original Drakengard and refine and add more content to the game.

Very, very slightly overrated.

The combat was just okay and is overshadowed by similar games that do it better (DMC/Bayonetta/etc). Obviously Nier is more of an RPG than those, but it still felt like playing an actiony game along those lines, but a little bit worse.

The B-route was also a little forgettable until near the end when it picks up.

Beyond those minor gripes, I loved the game, and didn't care about the fanservice in the least (as a gay male). The story, characters, and OST were all phenomenal, and some of the best in gaming. If the combat was a little bit better, I'd think it would have a legitimate claim to one of my favorite games of all time.

3 million sales worldwide is about right for a game like this, imo. It's artistic and meta in a niche sort of way. The B-campaign turns some people off, understandably, although the repetition is thoroughly justified in part C. It also had the best OST of 2017.

The reason why people who have beaten the game are so vocal about it is because the genius of Nier: Automata isn't immediately apparent. Part A is pretty good, if a bit short. Part B gives the impression that there's not much more to the game, and this is where some gamers will drop out too early. Part C is brilliant, but how do you convince people to stick with it that far?

Yeah I agree with this.

I'll add that the enemy design was a step down from the average Platinum game but that ties into combat.

Correctly. It's not quite Bayonetta or Bayonetta 2, but it's probably Platinum's 3rd best game.

Plot-wise, yes. But the way the game is structured is intentionally deceptive, imo. A player could be forgiven for thinking that those deeper plot points are just a tease and that Part B is a padded-out, second quest. I don't think the game makes an explicit promise that this radically different Act III is coming.
