I'm a millennial, and when I got out of high school (10 years ago) the job economy actually did really suck.

It's fine now.

There's also more people than any other time in history

I mean stats like that aren't very useful on their own. A better one would be "what is the chance of gainful employment based on job applications" or "what is the rate of wage inflation"

Like I know it tickles you to think that millennials want genuine opportunities and all that but not everyone is enamoured that McDonalds has an opening for fry cook

Oh right, $100k+ in student loans for a useless degree

This meme is so tired and it's like you won't even listen when barebone facts are presented

People earn less money now than they used to, even adjusting for inflation. People's dollars go less far than they use to. The ability to support a family does not extend to average single income families anymore. Things simply cost more than they used to.

These are very simple facts that take like 3 minutes of calculating to figure out but still we have "these darn millennials aren't prepared to work" being bandied around all the time

Forgot to mention this one. Whining that only jobs available are in fast food or retail, when in reality there are more skilled jobs than American students have STEM skills to fill. And theyre even easier for Americans now that fewer visas are being issued, since companies used to go overseas to find skills Americans dont have by virtue of majoring in useless liberal arts garbage.

As a person who made a job shift, more job openings is a bit of a misnomer. There are actually more and more job openings asking for unicorns than there are more inclusive job offers. Say, the ratio of 3+ years requirement vs. an entry level 1-2 experience is massively skewed to 3+ years, that's not to say some job markets have small teams for that job sector and is like 80% listing for senior members, which are 5-7+ years asking with super high end req. I don't think anybody who's under the age of 25 would ever say the job market is better than ever for younger workers because it's just plain not true.

That is also to say, I've worked with people around my age and is a thing that I notice very commonly. But I know Admiral is the kind to be a contrarian even if it means that he's wrong. Using phrases like it's easier this, it's easier that without any irl examples

I do wonder if he even has a job that's not retail

Do you really think there are more STEM jobs than unemployed or underemployed people? Filling those jobs wouldn't solve the problem.

btw, the number of STEM graduates still dramatically outpaces actual STEM job openings.

Uhh... does that make it right? What happens to people who don't realize the requirements are horribly skewed? What happens to companies who won't give up looking for a unicorn? Because from what I've seen datas of and heard, companies don't give up that easily if they already have an established team and isn't desperate, and people submitting applications have 0 leverage and are more likely to give up on applying for a position higher than their requirement. Also they might get murdered on technical aspects of interviews when they do go through the lottery of applying to jobs higher than their actual experience and get discouraged.

I dunno what companies you've seen where it's such a disneyland for you, but when both sides don't have all the know-hows and information, these things do happen. That's why these firms that take advantage of inexperienced recent grads that help them fake resumes and do copy paste answer for interviews are so successful nowadays. If that isn't an indication that there's something wrong with the way current companies are searching for applicants, I dunno what is.

Also having gone through 2 entry level positions in 2 completely different sectors, one in purchasing and one in programming, most people don't have the capability to answer most interview questions unless specifically prepared answers for those interviews. All that matters is willingness to learn, which is impossible to discern based on these strange copy-paste interviews. And most people learn to do their jobs at the job itself. That's why some start ups and bigger profile companies are drifting from doing interviews and poaching people in events and meetups instead

Actually, applying to positions with those "pie in the sky" requirements when you don't meet them can get you blacklisted at some companies. Also, many applications are never seen by an actual human and will be automatically rejected by a program for not meeting their ridiculous minimum requirements.

It took me 8 months and exactly 500 applications before I got my first offer out of college last week. It is a nightmare. I did stellar in school and have more real world work experience than most in my position.

About half of the time when an employer actually calls back, they have 2 questions prepared: "Tell me about yourself" and "What are your salary expectations?" (a God damned employer should know the difference between salary and wage, btw). That's it. I assume they have quotas of interview candidates; I can't tell you how many times I never even had a chance.

How the hell do you do that when you work full time? How do you search when your boss expects you devote yourself to the company 24/7? How do you take interviews? How do you have time to prepare?

When I was working, I wasn't able to search for a new job because of all this. And now I'm not working, no one will hire me.

Fast food and retail will turn you away for having a degree.

Yeah, it sucks. Their thinking is "this person will immediately leave the moment they get a better offer" and they're not wrong. If I was working some $8/hr McJob and got offered some kind of office work for double that? You bet your ass I'd be gone. Yeah, employers don't exactly appreciate it if you lie to them. It's a good way to get your application tossed in the trash.

And, for me personally, it would have been difficult to explain how almost all of my jobs for the past four years had been at a college. Employers aren't stupid and can recognize this kind of stuff.

If I were in this situation, I would just lie about it. There's no database where you can just enter someone's name and other personal info and their degrees pop up. If you don't say you have a degree, they'll never know. If they ask what you've been doing over the time you were in college, just make up a lie about doing landscaping for your uncle or something like that.
