Yeah, agreed. Uncle Phil really doesn't get enough credit for how awesome of a character he was. Easily one of the greatest sitcom fathers ever.

The episode where he calls out Will's biological father about why he abandoned Will and then hugs Will when he asks "how come he doesn't want me" is probably the most emotional I've ever gotten watching a network TV show.

I don't remember any episode where Ashley was the focus but I always thought she was the anchor. The 'normal' one to balance the eccentric shit of everyone else and put it in perspective.

Won't most of her lines just generic plot pushing ones?

You need that character in a show or else you end up like The Mighty Boosh

She was the main focus when she started a singing career and got a bloated ego and fired will as her manager. Other than that probly not.

you can have the straight man in a comedy and still have them be likable and interesting
like topenga on boy meets world
she was a very endearing character and her main role in the cast was to be the normal one to play off everyone elses wackiness

which is funny cause in the first season she was the strangest of them all

Ashley was the innocent one with a bit of snark, they tried to make her interesting with the singing thing but it just turned her into a brat for an episode and it was quickly dropped into the background as something she just does off screen.

One of sitcoms biggest problems that persists to even this day is how to write a teenaged girl into the family as someone the audience either relates to or doesn't hate to see on screen but more often then not they are the are the weakest character out of the entire family they're always boring,slutty or annoying or a combination of all three.

amy from the big bang theory was the main character
she was the teenage girl in a house of all men cause her mom ran off

it was pretty funny
joey lawrence played her older brother
he was the idiot in the family
her dad was a guy who made music and stuff
and her other older brother was a recovering drug addict

the very first episode was about blossoms first period
where she had a dream where her mom was the mom from the cosbys and talked her through the whole process

even when she got development she wasnt the greatest
and her actress was trying to get a music career going which is why those cringey stories were incorporated
