You'll find a very wide range of sexual preferences among gay guys. Part of it is that many are on the "down low" with wives/girlfriends and come into gay experiences with very firm requirements about what they're looking for and are not willing to deviate from those expectations. Also important to note that oral-only gay sexual encounters have drastically lower chances of passing on STD's. They're almost paranoia free.

There are people who don't do anal at all, i had friend who only did oral and all other stuff, just not that. Definitely not requirement lol i wouldn't say that Lots of gay men don't do anal, but Some don't.
And many only do that when they in an actual serious relationships only

Do you need a lube jerking it on your own ? Sure, you can use it if you like it, but you don't have to

I read an article once that said the majority of gay sex was not anal sex.

Don't know how accurate it was but the gist was that despite what TV and porn and jokes tell you, anal sex is pretty uncommon in terms of the average gay sex session and a lot of people flat out don't do it at all
