I honestly didn't know they were giants from a distance. I thought I could handle them. But they one shot killed my ass. I was like holy hell. I won't mess with them anymore.

Also this is my first time playing an elder scrolls title too.

Probably launched you into the stratosphere too. Better to take them on with a bow and a big stack of poisons.

When you're really low level they're tough to beat. Especially if you're a new player. Best to avoid them until you have better equipment, they won't attack you unless you get too close.

Where exactly is that bandit I have to kill? That's why I was in that area. Is he like in a cave?

Oh yeah I know who you are talking about

Real talk though hit start, go to quests, and highlight the quest to get a marker showing you where to go

You probably took a bounty to clear out a bandit hold. I think it's random where the game assigns the quest for those missions. Just follow your quest marker. There's a spell called "Clairvoyance" that helps you traverse the game world if you're still having trouble, you can probably buy it at the shop in Riverwood.

Get used to that, there are a ton of "radiant" quests in the game - basically most quests you take from a bartender or guild member that isn't the main quest giver of the guild.

No, why would you get a strategy guide for this game? Why would you even buy a strategy guide for any game in 2018?

Besides that, there's literally only one thing you need to know in this game and that's that the Thieves' Guild has a second quest that runs through all of their quests, which is to steal one special item during each of their story quests. And those items get added to the hideout and it looks cool. But you need to be careful in how you go about getting these items in the last quest because it's glitched and you can lock yourself out from completing the collection / completing that quest.

I wish I could play Skyrim again, but no matter what I do, the game crashes now because of left-over mods, I'm sure. I've tried a number of things to fix it, but nothing works. I never used to have any issues with the game when I first put it on my computer and modded it, but ever since I uninstalled the game, it's never worked for me again.

Same with Fallout New Vegas. 100% fine the first time, crashes every time now that I wanted to play it agin

Since it's your first time I do recommend focusing on at least combat-oriented skills (no stealing or speaking) since enemies do scale to your level. If you find it too difficult you can also either lower the difficulty, or discover how to become a werewolf because werewolves are the OPiest thing in this game. Magic may or may not be difficult, I remember people saying the spells don't scale as fast as other weapon types but maybe they fixed it.

Otherwise, like Morrowind and Oblivion the main story quest is some generic bullshit save the world crap and the meat of the game is in exploring and doing the guild stories and Daedric Prince quests (you'll find these as you explore).

Also be thankful this is your first one, since the other games all have jacked up leveling systems that require a post-grad degree in theoretical mathematics to figure out. They're also a million times better than Skyrim though so :\

Yeah Bethesda have zero concept of enemy design. They had the same issue in Fallout 4 - deathclaws were garbage compared to bloatflies and the mosquito things.

Facts

I can afford to take 3 Levels of Destruction, but I better not talk to anyone or else I might catch a level in Speech and that would screw up getting a +5 in x

Huge headache

I tried to start a new game of Oblivion recently... I got 100% achievements on the 360 (not hard, but still like I was able to play it once upon a time without issue). Even after reading the Wiki page on leveling I still screwed it up xfd. Just gave up :(

What other games do you play TC? You're probably just overthinking stuff. The game is really "baby's first RPG". You can't mess anything up and you learn what works well.

Focus on a weapon, a spell class and armor. You'll be fine and have lots of leftovers. Honestly, a lot of perks are 100% useless.

Because the game always points you in the right direction in vanilla, there's a compass you can't disable iirc

Stay the fuck away from giants unless you're like level 10 or more. They will fuck you up quickly, but there is one little trick. They won't go across water so if you can get one to chase you to a river then you can take them out with a bow.

Their AI is screwy if you are able to climb something they can't reach. It was pointless in hindsight, but I was able to slowly pick two off as they ran away when I climbed some rocks and then came back to attack during my first encounter after dying a couple times.

The game kinda requires you to use the compass marker given that quests rarely actually tell you where to go since they are designed around the compass marker. A far cry from the days of Morrowind reading the journal again and again to go past three trees and make a left, if you hit the mine you've gone too far etc.
