I'm a teacher/coach. The biggest reasons for me to get into teaching were wanting more out of my career then just getting a paycheck, and basically having about 3-4 months vacation every year. Between fall, thanksgiving, Christmas, spring break, and summers off it's close to 4 months off. My district spreads paychecks out across all 12 months, so I still get paid in the summer.

Not many other jobs where you get that much time off. As a teacher or prospective teacher you're not supposed to say summers off is why you like being a teacher, but every one knows it's a huge incentive.

What's wrong with orange county (it's pretty awesome here)? She's been teaching since right after she finished college (also has a master's which bumps up pay)

The idea is that teachers aren't being compensated ENOUGH for what they do

Generally, if you think otherwise, you're just ignorant about how much stuff goes into teaching.

Of course it varies from county to county, district to district, state to state. Wildly, actually.

Inner city teachers, especially, are not being paid enough. They're overworked and you already know they make out of pocket payments for classroom equipment. Work doesn't stop when school ends. They grade papers over the summer. Then they do it all over again in an overcrowded and underfunded school.

"Teachers in inner cities are underpaid" - yes, I completely agree. That's a valid statement and something that needs fixing. That's completely different than "teachers (in general) are underpaid."

And no grade, middle, or high school teacher "grades papers over the summer" so you're just making shit up at this point. ALL grades are due before they get their last paycheck for the year, so what are you even talking about?

Idk about the rest of the world, but teachers have it pretty good in NY

All city jobs in NY are good. I pick up trash for 2-3 hours a day then sleep, workout or go to school during the rest of the shift and make over 100k a year.

In rest of the world, teachers, police, fireman, garbagemen, etc.. all get paid crap and are less respected and treated a lot worse.

My wife is a teacher and she is in a district that pays the highest in county (makes about 80k/yr). Top that off with all the vacation she gets is pretty appealing to me.

does your wife do school-related things during her vacation

Just to set up her class/curriculum like a week before start of year

what grade level does she teach
also where do you live
also how big is the school she teaches in
public or private

1st grade
OC
Not sure
Public

Fucking goals. I don't make that much and I'm in oc and I do special ed. Then again, the school I work at is "non-profit".

Why do people on this board say that so fucking much? I refuse to believe they aren't just trolling me. In the last 10 years, I've written about 8 novels, and 3 short story collections.

Lots of schools will assign work to be done between grades. You're also forgetting that summer school is a thing.

Why do you hate teachers so much?
