Teaching is just as much a skill as knowing how to navigate a court case or design a building a CAD program

This. It used to be the case that if a kid was punished for misbehaving or failed a class, the kid would also be punished by their parents. Now, when a kid is punished or fails a class, the parents get mad at the teacher/school and try to help their kid weasel out of the consequences.

There is a reason why there are a ton of teacher strikes right now.

There are teacher strikes every year everywhere. It's been that way for as long as I can remember. The teachers union is one of the, if not the, strongest union in the nation. They strike because they know they can't be easily replaced. That isn't automatically indicative of the level of fairness of their pay and benefits.

In my state the average starting teacher makes around 44,000. The average overall salary in my state (not new teachers) is around 64,000. The average salary in one of the big cities in my state is around 85,000.

Teachers get shit on all the time, I get it. Sometimes they have to buy their own supplies and that SUCKS.

But I just don't get the whole "teachers are all poor" argument. What I posted above is decent money.

Generally, if you think otherwise, you're just ignorant about how much stuff goes into teaching.

Of course it varies from county to county, district to district, state to state. Wildly, actually.

Inner city teachers, especially, are not being paid enough. They're overworked and you already know they make out of pocket payments for classroom equipment. Work doesn't stop when school ends. They grade papers over the summer. Then they do it all over again in an overcrowded and underfunded school.
