So today's poll is actually just reinforcing the lies told by those who continue an illegal practice.

Opening a device you own does not, and can not void a warranty. Cases to confirm this have gone all the way to the top.

Warranties last a lousy year. Who's going to clean my consoles? Am I just supposed to buy another? Hell to that.

I've opened several for cleaning and mild repairs. Must be doing something right since (last time they were used) I have a working launch day PS2 and 60gb Ps3.

Mind providing a link to one, then?

Yes, companies should be made to provide free repairs for idiots who don't know anything about electricity, much less electronic engineering, opening their equipment and wrecking it with ESD and physical damage, as well as NPCs that drop their phones, store them in their underwear, or put them in a glass of beer to cool them down.

They just can't be enforced. They aren't actually illegal. The warranties only last a year normally and can have a maximum manufacturer warranty of 2 years in the case of Nintendo products. They do have a right to refuse warranty related free repair work after the warranty is expired and if the system has been opened, which can be proven by a broken warranty seal.

That was really only coded into law very recently. Until then, plenty of people may have effectively voided their warranty by opening a console, because the manufacturer would have refused to honor it.
