So do most people who bitch about this just have their parents pay for their phones?

The difference in cost between a cheap smart phone and a top of the line one is like $15/mo

As phones integrate more and more into our lives, the price becomes easier to justify.
Of course, I don't replace my phone until it's practically unusable.

Those people who pay that much are paying for the apple logo.

For a good smart phone, you shouldn't need to spend over $400.

Not only that the OnePlus 6 (which I'd argue is the best "value" smartphone) retails at $500 as well lmao

Maybe like 500.
But the real difference between the flagships and mid-priced phones are that most mid priced ones, that I've noticed, have worse cameras.
iPhone and galaxies have really good camera these days and that's lacking in cheaper phones. So for me, I'm fine with mid priced ones. I know for many others, that can be a deal breaker

I bought a Note 8 as a part of that special deal they had for former Note 7 owners (preorder the Note 8 for 50% off) and they sent it to me like 3 weeks before launch. The craziest thing is that they also sent me a 256 GB micro SD card when it was advertised to come with a 64 GB card. They also sent me a wireless charger.

Got my 6s plus 128 gb nearly 3 years ago and its still running in great condition!
As others have stated, the price tag can be justified given how much mobile phones have evolved and have become essential to the modern world ( standard phone use, gps, camera, games, media player, media content editing and creation, calculator, tools, dictionary, etc)

I normally dont get a new smartphone until Ive had it for 3-4 years, so its a great value for me.

The only phone that actually sells above $1k is the iPhone X

Even the Note 9 at full MSRP (which literally zero people would actually pay) is $995. If you wait like two months you could probably get it for $600-$700.

For most people, it's the single most used piece of tech they own. More than a car, more than a TV, etc. You can't really blame someone for wanting to splurge on it.

Her current phone is an iPhone 6, which is a $250 trade-in to Samsung. It came out to like $820 or so with taxes.

That's pretty awesome. Sounds like a good deal for 50% off and all those extras.

I currently have an S7 Edge so this is gonna be our first experience with a Note, but it looks sweet and she's excited for it, so I don't think it'll disappoint.

If anyone wants it unlocked and wants to pay full price (I would have bought it on Amazon but you couldn't trade in your old phone that way) you also get a free wireless charger and some kind of docking thing. Not really sure what it does.

That blows. Fortunately, Ive never had issues on the apple side of phones. As much as people love to talk shit about apple being overpriced garbage, their products are very stable and have the endurance of a nokia brick in comparison to its competitors.
