Scary as those things are they don't see humans as prey, thankfully.

They could have easily eaten those people. Not one human death from Orcas and only a few attacks in recorded history.

Well, I should say wild Orcas have never killed humans. There have been attacks and deaths by captive ones but it's highly debated why.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killer_whale_attack

Killer whales (or orcas) are powerful predators capable of killing prey much larger than humans, such as leopard seals and great white sharks. They have also been recorded preying on usually terrestrial species such as moose swimming between islands.[1] However, wild orcas are not considered a real threat to humans, as there is no record of a wild Orca outright attacking or harming a human.[2][3] In captivity, however, there have been several non-fatal and fatal attacks on humans since the 1970s.[4] Experts are divided as to whether the injuries and deaths were accidental or deliberate attempts to cause harm.[5][6]

Captive orca, literally doesn't count.

Kind of like how the whole alpha/beta thing is a misconception about how wolves behave; in reality they only behave that way in captivity

No the wolf thing isn't really a misconception. They can and do attack people in the wild and sometimes for no discernable reason.

Now wolves are highly social animals so it's POSSIBLE to engage with one non violently but seeing as you can't read their mind you're going to be a lot safer just staying the fuck away from them.

Carnivores in general are not threatening to humans so long as they're not hungry--that even includes super aggressive carnivores like piranhas. If they're hungry, all bets are off. If they're territorial like hippos or groupers, you could be attacked just for being close to them. If they or their offspring feel threatened they will almost always attack.

Okay that makes more sense, and that's an interesting statistic, I would have never guessed honestly.

I wasn't talking about wolf attacks, I was talking about the alpha/beta paradigm that people take seriously as an analogue of human social hierarchy

But yeah of course basically any predator will attack humans if hungry enough, I don't know anything about those Blackfish mishaps but if fucking captive orcas weren't being fed enough that's kind of on their captors. Point is, there has never even been a documented attack made by a wild orca on a human, so I've got to lean towards the Seaworld workers being at fault tbh

Oh. The Alpha Beta thing was actually a misunderstanding by the researcher that originally penned that paper. It turns out that a wolf pack is a family and the "Alpha" is actually the father wolf.
