The California legislature recently passed a bill banning restaurants from selling soda and juice with kids' meals and instead requires them to offer a cup of milk or water in an effort to fight childhood obesity. But, the purchaser of the meal may still buy an extra soda or juice and hand the drink to the child, thus negating whatever intended effects the bill hopes to accomplish.

The California Senate bill, 1192, passed assembly on Thursday after dieticians and various health advocates supported the new law. "Some of these kids are drinking up to three sodas a day. This is setting them up for tremendous cancer risks down the road. Because now we know that 20 percent of all cancers are tied to being overweight," Stephanie Winn of the American Cancer Society told media.

But, some parents argue that it simply is too much government interference. "I think the government shouldn't determine what's available when I as a mother know what's best with my child," Inez Deocio said.

Since the bill does not outright ban the sugar beverages from eateries, many parents will still buy their children soda or juice and end up spending more at a restaurant.

As noted by CBS, "A recent Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study found that almost two-thirds of boys and girls ages 2 to 19 drink at least one sugar-sweetened beverage per day. According to the CDC, frequent consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with weight gain and obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney diseases, non-alcoholic liver disease, tooth decay and cavities."

The bill was introduced by Democratic state senator Bill Monning.

What a pointless bill. It still gives the power for parents to supersede the order, making this a complete waste of time.

That being said, is this where were headed as a society? Where the parent no longer knows whats best for their child?

Do these people not even realize that most families with children dont eat out all the time? They dont have the money for such luxuries. AND when they DO eat out, its a special occasion. Like, the childs birthday. So, no , sorry you cant have a soda for your birthday Timmy, so load up on hotdogs (pig snouts), greasy hamburgers, fatty French fries, greasy chicken nuggets, macaroni and cheese, etc etc. shouldnt we ban normal kid food too?????

Cmon California...

Come the hell on here

Kids are basically on a diet of chicken nuggets and cheeseburgers now. Maybe the government does have to step in at some point.

Also kids shouldn't be drinking 3 sodas a day.

Whats wrong with indulging once in a while? Why should Uncle Sam tell me what to feed my kid?

If you only go out once in a while then you can buy a soda for $1.50 extra it seems. Young adult parents are definitely taking their kids out more than once in a while though. I'm willing to bet most meals in a week are fast food for the children.

This is basically a soda tax only all the money will go to the companies instead. If you make water the mandatory drink for kids' meals, which used to come with a free drink, and force parents to pay extra for the soda, all that does is drive up the price of the choice, with the extra profits going directly to megacorps. I guarantee that this bill was drafted by McDonald's or something and "offered" to the state to "help"

I think this is good for fast food restaurants which people love to complain about.

At least this way people cant blame kids meals for getting kids hooked to soda. The blame is solely on the parents specifically asking for soda.

apple juice is just as sugar filled as soda, though.

some restaurants offer those alternatives to soda/juice, but do all of them? probably not.

the effective thing to do here would be to force restaurants to present the healthy alternative and possibly even list the nutrition info of the drink choices on the menu.

Fact is many people are still rather ignorant when it comes to diet and nutrition. I myself was raised believing juice was healthy because it comes from fruit. I wont even get started on parents that allow their kids to drink soda. Soda can be highly addictive. The sugar content is insane.

The amount of obese children I see on day to day basis is frightening. Obesity truly is an epidemic in this country. From the lack of proper education to fast foods being so easily accessible, its only right a bill like this gets introduced.

Marketing is also a huge issue. Sure anyone can read a nutritional label, but the system needs to be reworked. A product like a bag of chips should have the full serving size listed. I hate seeing a label for a snack and itll having a serving of like 6-8 chips etc.
