Maybe schools should do like prisons... have each student have a commission account that the parents can put money into, and they use the money from that to buy lunches and stuff.

Every school I went to did this when it came to school lunch, I thought this was common

Mine did this and it was in the 90's. I remember it was $8.00 for a week for breakfast and lunch.

This is exactly what the school has. The ridiculous part is that the .15 was supposedly owed from last year.

The real kicker is that it was discovered that it was actually an error and the girl didnt owe anything.

And to be honest, anyone in this topic saying that a student should go without food over .15 can go to hell.

They should have just made her wash a dish for that 15 cents. The student get to eat and the cafeteria worker gets to go have a smoke. Everyone wins.

This is a good idea. It teaches the "no handouts" lesson without depriving the student of food.

That's against the law here in Oregon. I work at a public school were grade school and junior high are both free lunch for everyone, but over at the high school, you're supposed to still give them food even if they don't have the money. I don't work at the high school, but my mom is in charge of the district and it's insane how much money into the hole some of the kids are because the school dosen't enforce them to pay

When I was going to school there they would give the kids that didn't have money a PB+J Sandwich and a milk or something, but now they get the full lunch.

and for crying out loud it's FIFTEEN CENTS

we live in a world where the penny is worth less than the metal it's printed on >_>

But imagine this now, you do this and now 100 kids are short 15 cents.

Now the register comes up short.

15 whole dollars.

If having kids go hungry and wasting food seems like a better alternative or even a valid consideration to you I dunno what to say man.

lol....you've never worked in the fast food industry.

You're getting fired if your register comes up short 15 dollars because they think you're stealing.

This is different than fast food. These are kids that are supposed to get food.

A school.

A McDonald's.

Yeah that's totally the same and is a great comparison. We'll done.

My high school converted to free lunch for all like 10 years ago.

When I was in high school, 99-2003, we had a three tier system. Full, reduced, and free. Same for breakfast.

You never paid on the spot. It was tied to your student ID. They never turned people away without money, since, y'know, kids gotta eat to learn.

Full lunch was like 1.25ish per meal fyi.

This story is crazy and the school system is stupid.

*****

There were no options other than the school caf, or bring your own food.

Then why have a register?

Why charge anything at all?

A school cafeteria

Both cook food, serve food and collect money. Pretty fair comparison IMO

They aren't trying to make a profit, just making enough to keep getting meals and other necessities for the kids

"B-b-but the register would come up short!!!1!"

That's not an excuse because she could have simply given her the meal and not charged it to the account. This would have the same affect on the register balance as throwing the food away, and a kid wouldn't go hungry.

A student comes up 15 cents short of their lunch. That 15 cents goes towards securing more food supplies for the school, and the imbalance of the tills would be annoying as fuck.

Would you rather:

A) take the 15 cent hit, lose the food to the student and ask them to bring in some extra money tomorrow to pay for the discrepancy, or

B) throw the food away, wasting the 15 cents worth of grub anyway, and ensuring that a teenager goes hungry over a handful of pennies?

People like to frame this sort of shit as "no handouts", but the student could have resolved this the following day. With some trust and good faith, this could have gone over smoothly. Instead, the cafeteria worker went full asshole and wasted food that could have just as easily gone to the girl, with the same effect as if it had been thrown out.
