Statistics back it up, the idea makes sense to me, and I haven't heard a convincing argument that makes me think otherwise.

But really, it's more about facing blatant reality. Natural selection was cured. Reckless breeding is rewarded, quality of life is punished.

A) People catch on and do something about it, reverse engineer our DNA, patch out mutations. It's unlikely they'll catch every little problem, they might make something artificial and strange, like plastic surgery.
B) Inject our population with random clones of people from the past on a regular basis.
C) The US and first worlds like it turn into a third world country and a new population learns from our mistakes.

Hard Eugenics are off the table, Authoritarianism doesn't work, but eventually we will be overpopulated shoulder to shoulder, if people are going to do anything they're going to do it at that point.

It's not something I cry about at night. I don't care that Rome fell, it's just something that happened.

Really? Look around you. People are stupid. Phones are partially to blame as people no longer use full words, won't learn anything because they can 'look it up', or are often found walking into pools or traffic while focusing on the device. Social media has allowed everything to be offensive in some way in addition to allowing idiotic things like 'flat earth', feminism, or political rants to spread.

I fully believe that dumb is spreading faster and faster thanks to misuse of technology.

Yeah it really depends on what kind of smart we're talking about. Some guys are really smart when it comes to picking up a different girl every weekend but suck at everything else. Some guys can do differential equations all day but suck at everything else
