These sliced pineapples at the restaurant buffet seem... rather syrupy. They're overly slippery and I doubt it's the natural juices of the fruit, even the most delicious and sweet.

I wonder. Really like pineapple but I don't want the canned stuff for a plethora of reasons. It's kinda overly sweet too but I can't be too sure. Could you tell the difference?

Could have been refrigerated for a long time. About a week or more after slicing will do that.

Fresh, just cut Pineapples have sort of a stinging numbing sensation with a muted taste, to me.

This. If pineapple gets damp and is allowed to sit it gets a bit slimy (although not really in a bad way). Also over-ripe pineapple is kinda like that naturally. The only real way to be sure is to eat a piece. If the "syrup" tastes like straight sugar then its canned. If it tastes citrusy then its natural. Note that over-ripe pineapple is extremely sweet anyway though. Under-ripe pineapple is sometimes so acidic it sometimes tastes like a lemon.

Yeah I think it might be the bromelain that does that

Ok today the pineapple felt pretty sour and acidic and made my tongue tingly a teensy bit, so fingers crossed it's acually freshly cut and not canned

It's really, really easy to tell if you've had enough of both.
