I started out with Hue bulbs but they have so many caveats (like they turn on full brightness if the power goes out and you can't use the wall switches). Instead I started using dumb light bulbs and smart switches. Now I can control them remotely (using an app or Alexa) and still hit the wall switch. Plus the wall switch will still work even if the controller/app/Internet/whatever quits working.

For the new side of the house, which was built in the 1990s and has proper wiring with a neutral in each gang box, I've used GE Zigbee switches and the Amazon Echo Plus as the controller. These switches look like normal paddle switches so there's no learning curve for guests.

The old side of the house, built in 1914 and rewired probably some time in the 40s or 50s, uses Lutron Caseta switches. These don't require a neutral wire, but they're a bit fussy about bulbs and they're not Zigbee so I had to buy a Lutron controller, plus the controls look like something out of Star Trek so they're a bit intimidating for guests.

And for the barn and detached garage, I use Wemo switches. They're WiFi so they don't require a controller as long as they're in range of an access point, but they don't dim and they take up an IP address for each switch.
