The governments explanatory note says that the Bill could force a manufacturer to hand over detailed specs of a device, install government software on it, help agencies develop their own systems and capabilities, and notify agencies of major changes to their systems. In short, it would force communications providers to work extensively with the government to gain access to a targets data where it was in their power to do so, and it would also compel them to keep all of this secret.

Fiction becomes reality once more.

I'm curious how the current two years "wasn't enough". The article doesn't elaborate on it.

I'm bumping this because I just saw an article on it. Is this sort of garbage really going to pass? I know nothing about Australian politics or the basic rights you are guaranteed. 10 years sounds ridiculous, and here in the US law enforcement has been repeatedly told to fuck off when they've tried to get court orders forcing companies to develop software for them.

When is illegal for you to own a firearm, or even a taser, that basically means women and elderly people have no right to self-defense.

i skimmed through that and it says they need a permit and it didnt mention facing 10 years in prison for not letting a cop do that

whereas australia's bullshit sounds like they want the cops to be able to just scan anyone's phone any time like they do in China when searching for illegal materials

I do believe there was a recent story where someone was kept in jail because he refused to unlock his phone. Might've been a CP case or something like that.

I do agree that having someone unlock their phone to "assist" with a police investigation runs afoul of the Fifth Amendment. State's got to do the legwork.
