But yeah all non active personnel should have their clearances revoked. Dunno why this isn't a thing. If I quit my job the first thing they'll do is ask for my badge. Seems obvious.

Because what should be and is revoked is access to classified information. Clearance is a broader authorization to hold a position where a person may be exposed to said information, but access is still determined on a need-to-know basis. Clearance goes to the individual, access goes with the job.

They would be using the same argument, were the sides reversed.
Many people using it would say the opposite, for that matter. It's rarely actually about the argument, mostly it's just an argument to get behind.

Clearance doesn't mean "have access to data" it means "is allowed to be given data by active staff" in the event that their input might be needed.

For example, if John F. Kennedy wanted to conduct espionage on the Russians, he could have consulted Eisenhower--but not if he revoked Eisenhower's clearance.

I know. They have clearance. That doesn't mean access.

As if nothing can go wrong in a giant bureaucracy where millions of people have the potential to access sensitive information. The article gives an example that bad deadly consequences.

I probably should have addressed this earlier, but you realize that if you're revoking and rebestowing clearance, it's adding to the bureaucracy rather than streamlining, right? And that the system of revoking and reinstating clearance would be essentially the same as the current system of clearance and access, just adding another redundant layer on top of that.

The whole argument that this is justified because retired agents/directors/whoever shouldn't have clearance is a bit disingenuous anyway seeing how it's only being applied in this specific case and is openly being done in retaliation for criticism.

Also brutal shows he has no idea how clearance processing currently works, because every 2.5 years a TS goes through a reactivation/review period if it is still in use (5 for secret) which the employer has to pay for. No review, it goes inactive until it expires.

he also mixes top secret clearance with secret and confidential level clearances, which are much more common, and concludes there's millions of TS out there. there definitely aren't, it's an order of magnitude less common (and the higher levels that brennan et al likely have are rarer still)

so if anyone has an active TS clearance they've done work that would require it at least in the last 2.5 years. Secret, 5.

Be real folks: these guys are contractors/consultants working part-time with their clearances. Not just people sitting on them for no reason.

what an odd thing for him to say. liberal criticism of obama was frequent. i guess viewpoints like that come from people who never actually listen to what liberals say, but only listen to what conservative pundits/propagandists say?

Why do retired officers still have clearance anyway?

So they can continue doing consulting, advising, or get back into the business in a hurry if tapped for it. High level clearances take forevvverrrrr to get.

It isn't particularly relevant to this clearance situation, but ugh, McRaven basically ran an assassination program under the Bush and Obama administrations, devoid of oversight, and unconcerned with how many civilians it killed in the process of hitting its targets. Trump is a dangerous clown, but I don't much like all these intelligence and military guys either.

So then they should streamline the process by automatically revoking them upon retirement and rebestowing them upon request, instead of having yet another bloated bureaucracy where millions of people have information to "classified" information.

1 It's not millions of people and 2 it's a pain in the ass to get a clearance in the first place. You don't just "rebestow it upon request".
