A bear was found in the back of a car in California and was only able to escape after police fired a 'beanbag bullets' through the back window.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office responded to a call about a the animal being trapped in the vehicle in South Lake Tahoe, California.

'He's done a little bit of damage in there,' an officer can be heard saying on the video. 'We're going to try to get him out, because he's not happy at all.'

To help the animal get out, police came up with a plan. At first they shattered the back window with rounds of bean bags before finally carefully firing a shot into the car.

'It was much safer for the sergeant and the bear to access the vehicle this way,' the police wrote in a Facebook post.

The bear, likely scared for its life, then managed to jump out of the car and ran into some nearby woods.

The car's interior was apparently damaged, but there were no injuries.

It's not clear how the car came to be inside the car in the first place however police say bears in the area have figured out how to open car doors in search of food, but they're not so good at getting out.
