Considering that it was everyone's first time even seeing the game.

Kid could have ended up wasting time and losing the race, for all he knew.

I remember as a kid someone lied to me saying that there was a whistle in the spiral staircase that transported you to the Sky World on World 5. I spent a long ass time looking for it and that was before FAQs and Youtube :(

Many of us played the shit out of Tomb Raider and Tomb Raider 2 trying to find those elusive topless scenes/cheats.

There was a section where he called the game counselors when he was doing training for the event. I doubt they'd have info on SMB3 but that's probably the explanation as to how they knew about the secrets in the game.

Not that one. The one in the fortress where you have to fly over the ceiling and off the screen.

To be fair. My friends came over for a party the week I got the game and we were playing with the flight ability since it was new to Mario and one friend accidentally stumbled across it after about an hour.

I think it took me a year or more before I found the second.

Is it a whistle or is it a flute? It looks more like a flute, and the girl in The Wizard called it a magic flute as well. But I always called it a whistle when I was a kid.

I always figured it was a flute considering it played multiple note frequencies...

It's probably in the manual, but I've never seen the actual manual.

Lucky intuition. Mario 1 had a lot of secrets above ceilings. Never saw the movie, but it makes sense that an accessible ceiling qould pique a Mario players interest.

It was a tin whistle which is basically a whistle with a flute on the end.

Holy shit.

At least Jenny Lewis (Haley) stayed on the straight and narrow. She was the singer for Rilo Kiley.

I had a massive crush on her when I was 12. Come to think of it, she may have been the start of my redhead fixation. ^_^
