We should put limitations in funding for the top three most popular degrees and subsidize other profitable majors where shortages exist.

I am glad to see more kids are realizing there is no money to be made in art, english, history, etc. I've seen too many people rack up the debt just to work at Wal-Mart or Target when they could have just done that to begin with.

Yes I'm sure majoring in an area completely over-saturated will yield different results.

They need to realize business majors are just as worthless.

Not that the trend is shifting, but there absolutely is an over abundance of people in STEM that has begun to reflect itself in society. I mean, the whole idea of "STEM OR GTFO!" isn't a new concept and has been prevalent for the last decade or so, so you're beginning to see that the majority of those people are facing the same issues that those in the social sciences and such faced.

Basically, there's not enough jobs for all the kids attending and graduating anymore

This can be true. I've hired people that had no education beyond high school because they had the experience, but if it came down to a qualified person with the education and little experience or somebody without the education with experience, nine times out of ten we go with the person with the education.

A lot of jobs just require bachelors degree not giving a fuck what you majored in. Yeah STEM is getting to the point that unless you went something specific like electrical engineer you need a 3.6 or higher GPA if you went mechanical since now employers are interviewing like 80 candidates for one mechanical engineering position. And people who actually enjoy learning engineering probably got the highest grades versus people who went into STEM simply for job security. You're simply not going to perform as well as people who naturally enjoy the subject matter. They are more motivated to study and it comes easier to them.

It's a common choice with the "my parents want me to go to college" crowd. And the ones who are serious about it are like Jordan Belfort. Except with less drugs and more bitcoin and pyramid scemes and are too young to know better.

Oh I agree entirely. I just see it often with people I grew up with and a lot of those younger than me who went to college with the mindset of "STEM major will guarantee me a job!" who are in the same boat as anyone else who went to school. And I really feel for them because I imagine the debt for some of these degrees is a hell of a lot higher than others working the same jobs as them. Not to mention that automation in general is going to drive plenty of them out of work, if they are even able to get a job to start.

Basically I'd like to see a system where both the government and banks just refuse to give out loans at the rate that they do, as they damn well know that these students won't pay them back or if they do they will be into their 50s. As well as a refocus on the trades and jobs that are still requiring on the job training.

They're not useless though. They don't get you jobs that couldn't be obtained otherwise, but they certainly help you advance. It's how you become store manager, working 45 hour weeks, 6-7 days a week, for a livable, but not extravagant, salary.

Yeah I'm at law school. I've decided I'm just going state criminal attorney if I don't get a high paying job out of the gate. At least working for the state I'll get my debt wiped after 10 years regardless of how much I've paid off so long as I keep up on my payments. So I'll be debt free by mid-late 30s.

Some law schools are merging or just shutting down because their graduates are not getting hired(usually unaccredited schools) because the graduates have a lot of debt and they'll never pay it off. The schools are literally shutting down because the loan companies are fine with just handing out loans to people who are high risk and some of these students just don't realize what a mistake they are making by going to third rate schools with high debt and no prospects to paying it off in their lifetimes.

People are also theorizing another major recession similar to 2008. The housing bubble was caused by giving out mortgages to high risk people who had a strong chance of defaulting. Student loans are now being given to anyone and everyone including people who probably won't even finish and get the degree or people who just won't get a job after graduating so people are going to fault on their loans.

I'm kinda surprised that nursing isn't up there as well, though that may be due to the fact that many RNs opt to obtain their associates instead (despite the push for BSN prepared nurses).

Will be interesting to see how this plays out over the years.
