He violated that guy's personal space and property and ultimately put himself in that situation. That being said, what the other guy did was way too far. Catching him and putting a beating on him? Fine that's easy to defend considering the dude robbed him and violated his personal space. Even if the guy would have died because of hitting his head on the concrete or something, you could defend that. But beating him savagely for 5 straight minutes while people kept trying to pull him off? Kicking him while he was down and clearly not a threat? Way too far. I think it's a legitimate question to wonder if this guy is a greater threat to society than the thief is.
