Well, in some food businesses (at least from what I've seen in certain South American countries), tip jars are kept sealed throughout the year, and then opened during christmas and divided equally among workers. Basically what is known as "Aguinaldo".

A lot of fast food places that serve empanadas and stuff in Venezuela usually greet everyone that puts money in the tip jars with a very very loud "GRACIAS!" from the entire staff, which means thank you. It usually has some flair and/or ring to it and there was even one of these breakfast shops where I worked where they would lower one of the roll-up doors and hit it repeatedly.

It was amusing for the people, and a lot of tourists were left like wtf was that.
