Title is pretty self explanatory, is Fate: Whatever, or Shadows a better buy?

Cheers.

Considering everything, Echoes is by far the best. Best writing of the bunch, best music, art, characters, supports, Mila's gear, and just feels-wise, it's by far the one that actually feels like a war, compared to the superhuman 2-men army with RNG skill activation shit of Awakening and Fates that I personally hate.

But yeah it's pretty different overall as to why each game is better than the other. Fates has the difficulty and the most mechanics out of the series, but to me they're all just fat that Echoes trimmed down, though weapon triangle should probably be back, and maybe less dungeon crawling, since that was probably the weakest part of Echoes

Fates: Birthright is Awakening 2. More simple maps. Lower enemy difficulty. Simple objectives. Infinite XP.

Fates: Conquest is more like a traditional FE game. Wide map and objective variety. More difficult enemies. Limited XP. Be forewarned it might have the dumbest story of any FE ever.

Echoes is a remake of the black sheep of the series, Gaiden. It has a ton of mechanical differences from the rest of the series.

Fates. Most content on any single route, best gameplay, each route is basically a difficulty setting

Echoes is great in terms of presentation but hoo boy that fucking gameplay man

What's wrong with the Echoes gameplay?

Keep in mind I'm a huge FE fan and played the older console titles which most North Americans loathe in translation patches.

Conquest and Echoes

This, both offer very different experiences but are great at what they do (Conquest does gameplay brilliantly...not so hot elsewhere but that's okay, Echoes is a great overall experience with a distinctive, albeit divisive, gameplay style)

It's not traditional really. Way different than any other game in the series.

Each character has unique set of special abilities or arts or whatever they are called and they cost health to use. Classes work completely differently, archers have way more than 1 range, doubling is based on just 1 speed I think. I haven't played the game in a while. All the weapons are unbreakable, but each has a drawback, but I guess Fates brought that back. Their are shields and other weird stuff.

Echoes is a nice change of pace. There are two active campaigns that you play concurrently. Levels are no longer chapters. Instead there are larger chapters where you explore the world map and each chapter opens new sections. Dots on the world map play out like traditional chapters.

There are also side dungeons where your character can fully walk around in 3D, like Shin Megami Tensei 4 if you played that. If you run into an enemy it triggers a battle. Your units don't heal until you exit the dungeon. The only point of them is that they have goodies inside.

I'd play Echoes first, Awakening second, and go all out with Fates' routes and DLC

They're all worth playing really

Good to know. Loved Awakening, beat it and most of the DLC. (So...much...Awakening...DLC...), skipped Fates and Echoes at release though, and I don't have a Switch yet.

Fates has like triple, maybe quadraple the content of Echoes. Echoes has a better story though and is faithful to FE2 while keeping the modern aesthetic and quality of life improvements as well as a few extra maps so if you wanted to try out a pre FE7 game this is the best one.

I might end up with both eventually but gotta start somewhere right?

So I guess it depends on how long you'd be able to get them. If you can get them both in a relatively short period of time I'd suggest finishing echoes first since it's much shorter, you can replay it twice, once through hard mode in a shorter amount of time it'd take to beat all fate routes.
If you're going to have to wait a long time until you're able to get echoes though you might as well get fates first because of its longevity as you wait until you're able to get echoes. Though I'm not sure how much getting all routes is nowadays. It might actually be almost twice the price of echoes anyway.
