Isn't each book divided in two internally anyway? Not that difficult to print that as two books.

The Lord of the Rings is a single novel consisting of six books plus appendices, sometimes published in three volumes.
Tolkien actually suggested names for each of the six books, though there was never any formal agreement on their titles and they were simply published as Book I-VI. In some editions, a note on the text shares the tiles as listed in the contents with a manuscript version as: Volume I, "The First Journey" and "The Journey of the Nine Companions"; Volume II, "The Treason of Isengard" and "The Journey of the Ringbearers"; Volume III, "The War of the Ring" and "The End of the Third Age." It also mentions another set of titles can be found in Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien. The Millennium Edition was published in seven volumes, separating the appendices from the sixth book. Might be the edition you cam across with the appendices volume missing. It gives the titles for each book as: "The Ring Sets Out," "The Ring Goes South," "The Treason of Isengard," "The Ring Goes East," "The War of The Ring," and "The End of The Third Age." --- The only reason lightning never strikes in the same place twice, is that the same place isn't there the second time. ...
