47 y/o Ethan Hawke told GQ that his life FELL APART and went into the rabbit hole after he divorced his wife of 7 years..UMA THURMAN and said he's forced to take crappy commercial films in order to pay for her ALIMONY!!

They separated in 2003 just a year after Hawke got his first Oscar nom for Training Day which was the "best moment" of his career who said "In a lot of ways, it could have been the beginning of something. Like, maybe maybe you could be commercially viable. But i got divorced and my personal life fell apart. When you're depressed, it's really easy to see everything that is fake about other people and life, and i just started seeing all that. how phony celebrity was, how phony everything is. You channel your inner HOlden Caulfield, you know?"

They share 2 children, 16 y/o Levon and 20 y/o Maya who is starring in the upcoming hit, Stranger Things.

He said he didn't want to make films just to make money but said he's forced to do commercial films to pay that alimony to Uma and said "My best movies are not the ones that paid me: the Before trilogy, Boyhood, First Reformed, Dead Poets Society. But i'm 47 years old, i pay my alimony with my acting. I pay my kids health insurance with my acting. I pay everybody's tuition with my acting. i'm helping various charities with my acting"

He always wondered what kind of career he would have had if his life didn't turn upside from the divorce as both he and Uma's career were on the rise as she starred in the hit, Kill Bill..but beyond that she hasn't been in many commercial hits.

Ethan says "Despite doing some work like Gattaca, Reality Bites, Before Sunrise, i'd done thi skind of indie punk rock version of Hamlet, so i was doing work that i liked but nothing i was doing was making any kind of mark in a commercial environment. And to say i cared would be a vast overstatement because i really didn't care. It's not like, oh now i want to start making zombie movies by the dozen. I didn't want to be a commercial success. That wsan't something i aspired to. I wanted to make art that iw as proud of and that spoke to me."

But despite that, hawke took on bad movies he knew were bad before his pre-Training day success as he went to any audition he could where he got paid who admitted that when he was 30, he was WASHED UP as all of his friends were auditioning for Saving Private Ryan but he couldn't even get an audition as they knew his reputation for "bad films" by that time..

He was also TYPECAST which was another disadvatage as casting directors didn't need him to audition anymore because he was only fit for certain roles and not "serious" ones. Boyhood was his biggest upside to his carer as he played the father in the movie and it was BEST OSCAR.

Still, Ethan says a middle class lifestyle was always enough for him as he needed to pay for doctors bills and get his kids to school and doesn't need 3 pair of shoes as ONE was enough for him.

He works in any movie he can get as he's not the young guy he was making hit movies and at his age, he'll be lucky to get any starring role beyond a "dad' role..

Sounds like it was more child support than alimony and I can't imagine that his alimony was all that high.

Probably Uma Thurman. Super Ex-Girlfriend, The Avengers (the one with Sean Connery in a teddy bear costume), Kill Bill vols 1 & 2, Pulp Fiction, and Be Cool, among others.

Definitely Ethan. I don't like Uma, so I tend to avoid stuff with her in it.

I at least know Uma Thurman... I've heard the name Ethan Hawke often, but I couldn't think of even one of his movies
