https://www.pcgamer.com/fallout-76-wont-launch-on-steam/

The Fallout 76 beta FAQ states, among other things, that "the B.E.T.A. [that's a Fallout-style acronym for Break it Early Test Application] and the game will be available on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and on PC (via Bethesda.net only)." The Fallout 76 purchase page also bears only a generic "PC game" logo, with no mention of Steam. And today, Bethesda confirmed that neither the beta nor the full game will be released on the platform.

"The PC version of Fallout 76, for both the B.E.T.A. and the launch, will be available only via Bethesda.net, not on Steam," a Bethesda rep said in an email.

That comes as a real surprise: Bethesda would obviously like to push more widespread adoption of its own launcher, but foregoing the biggest, most popular PC digital distribution platform on the planet is a ballsy move. That's not to say it won't happen eventually, but it may be quite a wait if it happens at allFallout Shelter was released on Bethesda.net in July 2016, but didn't make it to Steam until March 2017.

Another interesting note in the beta FAQ is that if all goes according to plan the beta version will actually be the full game, and any progress you make in it will carry over into the release version.

"Our current plan for the B.E.T.A. is it will be the full game and all your progress is saved for launch," it states. The beta will also not be under NDA, although that was previously knownbut it takes on an increased significance if the beta build is actually the full game.

The Fallout 76 beta test is set to begin sometime in October. Everyone who preorders the game will be invited to take part.

eh if it bombs they can just pretend it was an experiment and rush their next games back onto Steam but if it drives any meaningful adoption of their currently pointless launcher they probably benefit hugely for their following games

Steam is simply the most popular ecosystem on PC. If a game isn't on there it would have to be something massive and popular with PC players to stand on its own. Blizzard games are a good example of games that don't need Steam.

EA games on Origin tend to have a pathetic userbase compared to consoles because it's just not a popular service. So all of the games on there are impacted. The Windows 10 Store is a similar story.

Eh some EA games are popular on Origin. It's mostly just that EA games in general are less popular on PC (so many sports games, FPS shooters that don't have a lot of longevity outside of consoles).

Windows 10 Store is a flop because it's such a barebones, confusing-ass, shitty service.

Same. But I also take advantage of Steam in-home streaming a lot and that can be damn convenient.

GOG is my place to go for indie and older games for sure.

I imagine that's exactly why they're doing it with a Fallout spin-off and not a main installment. Fallout is wildly popular now, so they can afford to try out independent sales and distribution with a game that looks like a Rust mod - if it still sells well that will validate it, and if it doesn't sell well, I'm sure they'll still recuperate what minimal amount of funding they put into developing the game.

I'm pretty sure Fallout 76 is a huge game for them. It's not just a low budget spin-off.

Nothing about it really stands out as anything nearly as intensive as a main TES or Fallout entry.

Based on what I've seen, it won't be on Steam at launch. Once they've made the initial chunk of $ and of course after all the idiots get their preorder in for a light-up plastic whatever and exclusive aardvark companion DLC then they'll have made a ridiculous profit and then turn it loose on Steam to make another ridiculous profit.
It's actually just petty because Sony and MS are going to take their cut, not to mention the extra costs of releasing a few day 1/2 patches once everyone discovers the worst of the bugs/duping glitches on console so complaining that Valve is going to take their cut is like whining about water being wet-that's the nature of the thing, the devs/publisher pay so the users get the service free and it reaches more people. They wouldn't have become big enough to ignore Steam at launch for FO76 without using Steam in the first place.
